When we moved into our house, it was full of shiny stainless steel appliances. Unfortunately, they were all reaching the five-year mark when we moved in. Two years later, we’ve had issues with both the refrigerator and the stove. The repairmen just shrug and say, “It’s about that time.” Then they let us know what will be breaking down next—they are almost always correct, collect our money, and mosey out the door. Most recently, our freezer has been leaking floods of water every other day. Mind you, we just had the ice maker repaired a few months ago. There was something about a valve and ice and drainage involved. The repairman spent about 12 minutes working on it. Then he informed us that the problem was fixed, but the repair wouldn’t actually take until we could let the unit defrost for a full twenty-four hours. “If you have to call me back in, I’ll know you didn’t defrost it long enough. Don’t try to give yourself a shortcut and turn it back on after twenty-three hours or the repair won’t work.” Humph. It took us a few weeks, but we finally emptied out both the fridge and freezer. We got rid of a lot of overage condiments that we had forgotten were in there, hidden in the back of the top shelf. Here’s hoping the defrost cycle works and it’s actually fixed at this time tomorrow. Then we get to enjoy the process of filling it back up.
