We’ve been mulling over our options for the past few weeks and have finally made a few decisions and commitments to our future. One of the greatest things about working at Keyah Grande is our relationship with the owners. We’ve learned a lot from them, and there is definitely a relationship of mutual respect. So, when Barbara came to us and asked us to give her one more year, it was a tough decision to make.
It takes a number of years for a new hotel, especially one in a remote location, to get off the ground. This year has been much busier than last year. If the feedback we’ve been receiving is accurate, next year will only increase in traffic and revenue. Barbara feels strongly that she needs us to be a part of the team to bring things to fruition. As longtime readers know, we had given our notice last spring and were planning on venturing out on our own in January.
One of the key factors in making our decision is that they are finally going to make this a seasonal resort. Winters are not busy here; we’re just not close enough to the slopes to attract ski traffic. Our spring, summer, and fall seasons are gorgeous, with lots of outdoor activities to attract visitors. Winters are deadly, and one of our biggest issues was being trapped out here for months with no guests, no calls, and no interest from prospective visitors. Things turn around rapidly in May, so the new season will run from May to December. Although our financial situation will not change very much, this will allow us time on the East Coast to scout out our new location and buy a property of our own. We’ll be able to begin paying off the mortgage while still drawing a paycheck and fattening our nest egg to carry us through a new beginning.
So, in case you hadn’t guessed, we’ll be staying on for another year. Most of the first four months of 2007 will be spent on the East Coast, except for our sojourn down under in February. Our main focus will be laying the groundwork for the next step. So, for everyone who hasn’t made it out here yet, you’ve got a bit more time to plan your trip. For those of you who are waiting for us to open our own place in a more accessible location, well, anticipation only sharpens the appetite. This extra time will enable us to make sure that our next endeavor is everything we want it to be.
